Review "On Being Certain challenges our understanding of the very nature of thought and provokes readers to ask what Burton calls “the most basic of questions”: How do we know what we know?”--Scientific American Mind “In his brilliant new book, Burton systematically and convincingly shows that certainty is a mental state, a feeling like anger or pride that can help guide us, but that doesn't dependably reflect objective truth… In the polarizing atmosphere of the 2008 election, On Being Certa

Archer As an atheist I read this book not to reinforce my own non-belief but for the possibility of discovering a different path to atheism. I got more than I bargained for. As a kid I was raised as a Mormon until I was 13 and simply refused to continue going to church. I still believed in god at the time but I just couldn't shake the bad taste I had in my mouth for Mormonism. It was probab

Essays Here are articles on various topics having to do with Christianity, especially for those who believe the Bible is the inerrant, infallible word of God. These are things we wish someone would have brought to our attention when we were Christians. Our hope is that they help add some light to that difficult path out of fundamentalist faith to reality. If there is a subject you'd like to see added, please let us know. And as always, we invite any comments and questions you might have.

Why is faith a virtue? We laugh at those who tell us the holocaust never occurred, and mock those who whisper 9/11 conspiracies. We cross to the other side of the street when approached by a fellow mammal babbling to an imaginary friend. Would we not call someone who believes the world is flat a delusional crackpot? Why do we not judge all people by the same standards? Why do "people of faith" get a special pass?

Therefore, people who make the lonely journey out of a literal faith in the Bible often find themselves misunderstood, even by those who are not literalists themselves. There a
