The website's url: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Young_Atheists_Freethinkers/
Title:: Young Atheists Freethinkers
Summery:: Description

Welcome to the Young Atheists and Freethinkers group on Yahoo.

As the name implies, this group exists to provide young doubters a forum in which to air their doubts about religion, and their questions about atheism. It is a place where they can become comfortable with those doubts.

This is not a debate forum. If you are here for the purpose of converting anyone, or attempting to win back the youths that come here asking questions, sorry, you're out of luck. The forum is strictly moderated and any such messages will be deleted from the message base and the offending member banned. We do not fear debate, as any one of us can be found in the many other debating forums out there. We highly recommend Debating Christianity as a place where you can easily strike up a debate, in a congenial and cordial atmosphere free of invective. Here you will not find such cordiality, as you are not welcome here if you are an evangelist.

Naturally other rules apply, the usual ones against spamming and flaming.

Young people whose beliefs may not be accepted where they normally live and go to school will find this non-dogmatic, welcoming atmosphere a relief. If you are a young person interested in atheism, please do give us an introductory message letting us know how old you are, how you came to doubt religion, what if any problems you are having with your doubts, and any questions you have about atheism, freethought, etc.

Thanks,

For more than two decades WLUML has linked individual women and organisations. It now extends to more than 70 countries ranging from South Africa to Uzbekistan, Senegal to Indonesia and Brazil to France. It links:
women living in countries or states where Islam is the state religion, secular states with Muslim majorities as well as those from Muslim communities governed by minority religious laws;

women in secular states where political groups are demanding religious laws;

women in migrant Muslim communities in Europe, the Americas, and around the world;

non-Muslim women who may have Muslim laws applied to them directly or through their children;

women born into Muslim communities/families who are automatically categorized as Muslim but may not define themselves as such, either because they are not believers or because they choose not to identify themselves in religious terms, preferring to prioritise other aspects of their identity such as political ideology, profession, sexual orientation or others.

Our name challenges the myth of one, homogenous ‘Muslim world’. This deliberately created myth fails to reflect that: a) laws said to be Muslim vary from one context to another and, b) the laws that determine our lives are from diverse sources: religious, customary, colonial and secular. We are governed simultaneously by many different laws: laws recognised by the state (codified and uncodified) and informal laws such as customary practices which vary according to the cultural, social and political context.

by  Kamran Memon

Wife abuse has hurt many Muslim women, destroyed many Muslim families, and weakened the entire Muslim community. How much longer can Muslims afford to look the other way?

"And among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and he has put love and mercy between your (hearts)..." Qu'ran 30:21

"I recommend that you treat women with goodness. The best of you are those who treat their wives the best." Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him)

While North American Muslims loudly protest the widely-documented Serbian abuse of Muslim women in Bosnia, the abuse of many Muslim women at the hands of their own husbands in North America is hidden and ignored by the community.

Domestic violence is the single major cause of injury to women in America. "Nearly one quarter of women in the United States - more than 12 million- will be abused by a current or former partner some time during their lives," according to the American Medical Association; and, despite Islamic teachings of justice and compassion, many Muslim women in the United States and Canada are no exception.

Based on information from Muslim leaders, social workers, and activists in North America, the North American Council for Muslim Women says that approximately 10 percent of Muslim women are abused emotionally, physically, and sexually by their Muslim husbands. (There are no hard numbers, because community leaders haven't taken the well-known problem seriously enough to research.)
Tags:: abuse wife Muslim
In private practice since 1993, she previously directed the Children's Behavior and Learning Clinic in Bellevue, Washington. Currently, in addition to her writing and lectures, she maintains a practice specializing in adolescents and families.

Her first book, Deas and Other Imaginings, is a collection of stories described as "somewhere between Zen and folktales, somewhere between child's play and wisdom, somewhere between dreaming the world and healing it."

In her own effort to heal a world that is being fractured by cultural and religious zealots, Tarico wrote a second book, The Dark Side, about her personal encounter with religious fundamentalism and her spiritual journey in search of goodness, love and truth.

She has developed a series of lectures informed by her clinical practice and personal experiences that equips parents and educators with tools to understand and nurture the innate goodness in our children.

If you look up at the stars every so often, and wonder for answers that are beyond omnipotent and omniscient deities, then this is the group for you. If you wonder at the beauty of the animal kingdom, and find that the answers you've been given don't fit the world you've seen (or studied), then this is the group for you - and if you've been persecuted for believing unorthodoxically from the beliefs of your family/community, then we can help.

A certain percentage of what we do is serious - and not-so-serious. UAS' infamy at UNSW for various satirical acts and promotions is well known. If you can align with simple anarchy and have a willingness to test NSW's judicial system, you are also welcome to come along to our pranks and various shenanigans (or help out with our advertising).

UNICEF is guided in doing this by the provisions and principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Built on varied legal systems and cultural traditions, the Convention is a universally agreed set of non-negotiable standards and obligations. These basic standards—also called human rights—set minimum entitlements and freedoms that should be respected by governments. They are founded on respect for the dignity and worth of each individual, regardless of race, colour, gender, language, religion, opinions, origins, wealth, birth status or ability and therefore apply to every human being everywhere. With these rights comes the obligation on both governments and individuals not to infringe on the parallel rights of others. These standards are both interdependent and indivisible; we cannot ensure some rights without—or at the expense of—other rights.
Tags:: child rights international convention United Nations
Now that she graduated from Columbia, that 'one day' has come.

   Project Amish, the bridge, is only in the idea phase but Torah will develop it over the next 12 months in conjunction with writing a book about her experiences pre- and post-escape. Through Project Amish, Torah will bring more awareness to the general public about what goes on behind the scenes within the Amish so that the Amish (especially women and children) have a better chance at being offered the assistance and resources that they need, whether that's improving their lives as practicing or non-practicing Amish.

   Torah envisions Project Amish to be a nonprofit organization that provides everything that an Amish person needs to optimally function in mainstream America, as well as assist those who don't wish to leave the Amish but still want aid. The programs and services offered will address the emotional/psychological, physical and spiritual arenas--whatever is needed to promote an individual's holistic well-being.

   How to Help

   When they hear Torah's story, many people wonder what they can do to help the Amish. Until Project Amish is set up to accept tax-deductible donations, we suggest that one consider donating to or becoming involved with one of the organizations below that Torah likes.
   Also, Torah is looking to connect with agents or publishers interested in spreading awareness of her experience (reflective of the experience of many) in book form. Please contact her if you are interested in the book that she is writing.

Article history
In recent years, society has ever more sharply divided over the big moral questions. On the one side stands a powerful group of religious leaders, politicians, irate newspaper columnists, ex-lefties and penitent liberals who openly deplore the legacy of the 60s and the associated decline in everything from community to education, private and public safety to family life. On the other side stands a somewhat sheepish liberalism, its members welcoming some aspects of modernity and morality, staying mystifyingly silent on others. In terms of pure column inches, the new traditionalists almost certainly win hands-down.

The documentary was first broadcast in January 2006, in the form of two 45-minute episodes (excluding advertisement breaks), on Channel 4 in the UK.

Dawkins has said that the title The Root of All Evil? was not his preferred choice, but that Channel 4 had insisted on it to create controversy.[1] The sole concession from the producers on the title was the addition of the question mark. Dawkins has stated that the notion of anything being the root of all evil is ridiculous. [2] Dawkins's book The God Delusion, released in September 2006, goes on to examine the topics raised in the documentary in greater detail.
Tags:: documentary television Richard Dawkins
Some even grasp onto wild conspiracy theories that blame Americans for 9/11 - just as the millions of Jihad victims over the centuries are in some way held responsible for their own slaughter as well.

And finally, we came to realize that this extraordinary arrogance and self-absorption on the part of the Muslim community, along with an inability to empathize with people who are not like them or engage in the sort of self-critique that leads to moral progress is in no way incidental to the religion.

There is something deeply, deeply wrong with Islam.

Originally, we started this website in the naive hope that perhaps Muslims just didn't realize the extent of the violence that is committed in the name of their religion. Perhaps if they understood, then they might be motivated to turn the critical eye inward and resolve those far more important issues that leave so many lives in agony and force the consumption of so many billions of dollars in security resources.
Tags:: Islam terror total deaths fatwa Koran
The website's url: http://www.skeptic.de/index.php?action=book&articleno=0429
Title:: The Recovering Catholic
Summery:: Jacket Text
Why are women leaving the Roman Catholic faith? Why are so many refusing to raise their children as Catholics? What has made some women so outraged at Catholicism that this anger remains long after they have left the church? What would make these women view themselves as "recovering Catholics"?

Women are leaving the Catholic church in record numbers. Many question a faith that continues to maintain a patriarchal attitude toward them. Some women are disturbed by the church's obsession with sex and its ban on birth control and abortion. Not allowed to serve as priests, women feel discriminated against when they are not included as full members of the faith.
The Recovering Catholic brings together poignant stories of more than fifty women whose ages, backgrounds, life experiences and geographical locations differ markedly yet each made the difficult choice to leave the Catholic church in order to find a more fulfilling way of expressing her spirituality. Women profiled range from an eighteen-year-old student to a twenty-nine-year-old homemaker to a sixty-nine-year-old retired market researcher.

Author Joanne H. Meehl addresses a wide variety of topics including the reasons why women begin to question their faith, the heavy burden of religious guilt, the attitudes of the Catholic hierarchy toward women and the escalating amount of sexual abuse cases involving priests. She includes practical advice on breaking away from the church - including how to tell your family that you are no longer Catholic - as well as information on choosing new spiritual outlets.

The Recovering Catholic is the first book on the Catholic church to focus on the individual journeys of women who faced not only discriminatory practices and oppressive dogma, but the ire of their families and society in their search for a spiritual happy ending. For all who are struggling with the emotional turmoil of religious commitment versus church teachings. The Recovering Catholic illustrates how you can successfully choose to leave the church and find new avenues for your faith. You, too, can recover from the crippling effects of a dogmatic religion.

Domestic violence and child abuse exist in the Jewish community; they cross all socio-economic levels and religious denominations. They exist despite the denials, despite the skepticism that such ugly behavior can exist among our people always so proud of our exemplary home-life; despite the fear that exposing them will bring Jews into disrepute; and despite the apprehension that our reputations will be tarnished. Such fears dare not allow our people to suffer violence and abuse!

By continuing to deny and refusing to act we shirk our responsibilities to our daughters and sons, our mothers and sisters, our fathers and brothers. The problem is systemic.
The Jewish community has no single hierarchy or unifying infrastructure that enables it to set standards for training or to hold professionals responsible in these areas. There is no standard for institutional protocols and response. Thus, the response of rabbis, teachers and counselors to survivors of abuse is only as good as their training and experience in identifying and dealing with these issues. Too often, it’s inadequate. A MIXED BLESSING

The discipling movement has appeared in several religious groups under various labels. Several denominations have experienced growth as a result of the discipling movement in various places throughout the world. Those same denominations, however, have been troubled by the doctrines and practices associated with this movement.

The word "discipling" is used in this movement to mean much more than making converts. It is used primarily to describe a system of intense training and close personal supervision of the Christians being discipled. Disciples are regarded as being superior to mere Christians. Disciples are said to be Christians who have received special training. This training includes much more than mere teaching. There is an intense one-on-one relationship between the discipler and the Christian being discipled. The discipler gives detailed personal guidance to the Christian being discipled. This guidance may include instructions concerning many personal matters of a totally secular nature. The person being discipled is taught to submit to the discipler. Furthermore, the person being discipled is taught to imitate the discipler. Christians being discipled are required to confess their sins to their discipler. Such confession is followed by rebuke, correction, admoni-
tion, and prayer. If the person being discipled seems reluctant to confess sins, the discipler asks probing personal questions to elicit the confession.
Tags:: discipling religious abuse
Important but disturbing, May 1, 2001
By A Customer
This book is an important but disturbing look at the mixed messages and hidden curriculum in modern churches. Congregations which paradoxically use blind obediance while asking one to trust a loving God who kills can either provoke a crisis of personality or a self-destructive impulse in children/teens/then adults. Christianity has too long been an adult dominated, child exploiting patriarch which vehemently denies children (and often women's) rights to life, self, happiness, and proclamation.
It is a great beginning to an important dialogue.

Naturally, Muslims aren’t going to promote our presence, so we have to.

I’m going to start a new blogroll, linking to blogs written by apostates from Islam. I think it’s admirable that out of such a repressive religion, people are nevertheless choosing to speak up. They have my support, even if I don’t agree with all their views.

If you are an apostate from Islam and have a blog (and obviously, if you don’t object to being on my blogroll), please drop a comment here and I will add you.

All apostate blogs (and some notable Muslim apostates and websites) will be listed in the sidebar under “Other Apostates.”

In all these aspects of a child's life, parents should stress the necessity of self awareness and how to think logically about making choices. Your goal should not be to impart your knowledge so much as to lead your child through the steps for making good decisions in life. Atheists place a high value on personal freedom meaning they do not have to answer to a church or other authority when it comes to making decisions about their lives. As long as they are responsible and live according to the law and respect other people, then they are free to enjoy the maximum number of choices in life.

Talk to Action - James Dobson article

The website's url: http://www.talk2action.org/story/2006/9/15/224228/895
Title:: Talk to Action - James Dobson article
Summery:: I have been writing an ongoing series in regards to the troubling subject of religiously motivated child abuse--one of the darker secrets of the dominionist community--starting with an article regarding one of the five to fifteen or more reported deaths a year in the US attributable to religiously motivated child abuse and which are largely summarised in a wrap-up here. Some of these cases are truly horrifying--including kids being shuttled to multiple locations for continuation of abuse and even some of the very parties legally required to report such abuse being some of the perpetrators.

The folks behind Stop The Rod have been some of the best folks around at exposing this dirty secret of dominionism and keeping the promoters of "Bible-based baby-beating" from sweeping the subject--and the occasional corpse, and the scores more psychically and physically wounded from this--under the rug. Among other things, they were among some of the first to do an expose of the works from the Pearls now linked to the death of a child, and have done valuable work in also exposing the promotion of religiously motivated child abuse by Tedd Tripp (whose methods in some ways are even more abusive than the Pearls'!), Richard Fugate, Reb Bradley (who at times literally commits plagarism of Fugate's baby-beating manuals), Lisa Welchel (who became quite infamous when she promoted the use of "hot saucing"--placing hot-sauces and extracts--on the tongues of small children for things like "sassing"; Tabasco's manufacturers (McIlheny Inc.) and Texas Pete's makers both issued statements calling the practice "strange and scary" and giving strong warnings about it) and has a heartbreaking and horrifying story from a survivor of--and the main test subject for--Roy Lessin's baby-beating books.

And now the folks at Stop The Rod have begun their same stellar work at exposing abuse from probably the most well known name in religiously motivated child abuse--none other than Dr. James Dobson.

Yes, that Dr. Dobson. As in the guy behind "Focus on the Family" Dobson. Sit tight--this is going to be a heck of a ride.
Tags:: Christian discipline child abuse dominionism fascism
These schools are popular. British parents have been known to fake religious commitment to get their child into the right school. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has just confirmed that Australian parents are also abandoning public education in favour of the new, government-subsidised faith schools.

This rapid rise in religious schooling has, of course, been accompanied by concerns, not least of which is that faith schools can be deeply socially divisive.

While I share that worry, my greatest concern is that that the smoke generated by the battle over whether religious schools are a good idea has obscured a more fundamental question: a question about the kind of religious education schools offer. To what extent should schools be allowed to encourage deference to authority when it comes to moral and religious matters? To what extent should they be able to suppress independent, critical thought? -- Stephen Law, Philosopher

Quote from Amazon.com review of
The War for Children's Minds: Liberal Values and Why We Should Defend Them

Stephen Law has written a very informative book on the importance of liberal education for children. He argues persuasively that liberalism does NOT entail absolute moral relativism or the education of children without behavioral standards.

We offer students and their organizations a variety of resources, including but not limited to leadership training and support, guest speakers, discounted literature and conference tickets, and thought provoking online articles and opinions.

The SSA also offers major long-term benefits both to the major secular national organizations and to their local affiliates:

    Our independence of any national organization allows us to move beyond the rivalries of the past and create opportunities for the various secular national organizations to work with us and hopefully each other in educating and training students. While some students are comfortable with an atheistic outlook, others identify as secular or religious humanists, and yet others prefer the emphasis of skepticism. The SSA acknowledges these differences and seeks to provide channels through which all of these students can explore their particular interests and inclinations through involvement with similar organizations once they graduate.

    To any minimally astute observer of the freethought movement, it is apparent that our lack of numbers inhibits our ability to educate the public about atheism, free inquiry, critical thinking and scientific reasoning. The key to resolving this problem is building a strong youth and student movement. It's not enough though to involve students and then lose track of them when they graduate. The SSA is committed to finding solutions to this problem by developing programs to maintain involvement, communication and community. Pursuant to this effort, we wish to develop tight ties with local and national groups to assist us in this effort. We hope to position the SSA as a significant means by which local and national organizations grow their pools of subscribers, activists, writers, donors and talent.

We are housed by the Institute for Humanist Studies in the Humanist Center.
Tags:: secular student group alliance nonprofit high school college reason science secularism
Here's a chilling piece by Jim Benton on Christian fundamentalist child-abuse manuals. Sweden outlawed all forms of physical discipline in child rearing in 1979.

Bible Based Baby Beating
By Jim Benton

Warning: the following will be and should be disturbing to many of you, particularly parents. If you are squeamish, or think that children are individuals to be loved rather than creatures whose main job is to obey mindlessly, you might want to avoid this. But you may be the ones who most need reading it. And I can't avoid saying that any of you who are involved in an American political election where one candidate is supported by the Religious Right and Focus on the Family in particular, should challenge this candidate to say whether he accepts practices and attitudes like these.
Tags:: religious child abuse James Dobson Pearl corporal punishment
Personally, I'm an advocate of the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights when it comes to apostasy:
Article 18.
Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.

Of course, this sentiment is not shared by all.

There are troubling statistics that state that 36% of British Muslims, aged 16-24 advocate the death penalty for Muslims who change their religion. What is this based on? Just random thoughts?

No, it's based off of the Koran and the Hadith.
Tags:: apostasy penalty
Religious beliefs can foster, encourage, and justify child abuse, yet religious motivations for child abuse and neglect have been virtually ignored in social science research. In this paper, we compare victims' retrospective reports of religion-related child physical abuse to other reported cases of child physical abuse. We describe in statistical
detail the nature and circumstances of the abuse, characteristics of victims and perpetrators, and the spiritual and psychological impact of the abuse. Results indicate that although the basic characteristics of religion-related physical abuse are similar to nonreligion-
related physical abuse, religion-related abuse has significantly more negative implications for its victims' long-term psychological well-being. Conducted by Marlene Winnell, author of Leaving the Fold

Between an introduction and appendix provided by Babinski, 33 former Christian fundamentalists explain how and why they first embraced, and later abandoned, that belief system. Of these, eight have become atheists, eight (including Babinski) agnostics, one a wiccan, and one a Zen Buddhist; the remainder have remained Christian. Major contemporary religious writers such as Harvey Cox and Sam Keen are included. The agenda here is unmistakably antifundamentalist, and the occasional leak of vitriol does distract. Also, in its ambition to be comprehensive, Babinski's annotated "list of additional testimonies" neglects a distinction between trash and treasure. However, in the main the individual statements and recollections are clearly, thoughtfully, and intelligently presented, and documentation is thorough. For this reason, and because no similar collection of such breadth and depth is available, this work is reservedly recommended as a useful addition to church, academic, and larger public library collections.?Bill Piekarski, Southwestern Coll. by Jim Moyers, MA, MFT
While this article was originally written for psychotherapists working with ex-fundamentalists, it should be helpful for anyone who has been involved with a restrictive religious group.

Restrictive religious groups, characterized by rigid beliefs, authoritarian structure, rejection of mainstream culture, and isolation from outside influences that might lead to questions about the group's teachings, come in many forms, from fringe cults to well established churches. While the experience of individuals involved with so-called cults that clearly deviate from orthodox religious practice has been extensively discussed in both popular and professional literature, there has been relatively little recognition of the fact that similar issues are often associated with conservative forms of mainstream religion. While much of what follows is based on the experience of former members of Christian fundamentalist groups, there are parallels with restrictive groups from all traditions.

The website's url: http://www.amazon.com/Being-Certain-Believing-Right-Youre/dp/0312359209/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222300751&sr=8-1
Title:: On Being Certain: Believing You Are Right Even When You're Not
Summery:: Review
"On Being Certain challenges our understanding of the very nature of thought and provokes readers to ask what Burton calls “the most basic of questions”: How do we know what we know?”--Scientific American Mind

“In his brilliant new book, Burton systematically and convincingly shows that certainty is a mental state, a feeling like anger or pride that can help guide us, but that doesn't dependably reflect objective truth… In the polarizing atmosphere of the 2008 election, On Being Certain ought to be required reading for every candidate -- and for every citizen.”--ForbesLife

“What do we do when we recognize that a false certainty feels the same as certainty about the sky being blue? A lesser guide might get bogged down in nail-biting doubts about the limits of knowledge. Yet Burton not only makes clear the fascinating beauty of this tangled terrain, he also brings us out the other side with a clearer sense of how to navigate. It's a lovely piece of work; I'm all but certain you'll like it. “--David Dobbs, author of Reef Madness; Charles Darwin, Alexander Agassiz, and the Meaning of Coral

“Burton has a great talent for combining wit and insight in a way both palatable and profound.”--Johanna Shapiro PhD, professor of Family Medicine at UC Irvine School of Medicine

“A new way of looking at knowledge that merits close reading by scientists and general readers alike.”--Kirkus

“This could be one of the most important books of the year. With so much riding on ‘certainty,’ and so little known about how people actually reach a state of certainty about anything, some plain speaking from a knowledgeable neuroscientist is called for. If Gladwell's Blink was fascinating but largely anecdotal, Burton's book drills down to the real science behind snap judgments and other decision-making.”-- Howard Rheingold, futurist and author of Smart Mobs

“A fascinating read. Burton’s engaging prose takes us into the deepest corners of our subconscious, making us question our most solid contentions. Nobody who reads this book will walk away from it and say ‘I know this for sure’ ever again.”--Sylvia Pagán Westphal, science reporter, The Wall Street Journal

“Burton provides a compelling and though-provoking case that we should be more skeptical about our beliefs. Along the way, he also provides a novel perspective on many lines of research that should be of interest to readers who are looking for a broad introduction to the cognitive sciences.”--Seed Magazine

Product Description
You recognize when you know something for certain, right? You "know" the sky is blue, or that the traffic light had turned green, or where you were on the morning of September 11, 2001--you know these things, well, because you just do.

In On Being Certain, neurologist Robert Burton challenges the notions of how we think about what we know. He shows that the feeling of certainty we have when we "know" something comes from sources beyond our control and knowledge. In fact, certainty is a mental sensation, rather than evidence of fact. Because this "feeling of knowing" seems like confirmation of knowledge, we tend to think of it as a product of reason. But an increasing body of evidence suggests that feelings such as certainty stem from primitive areas of the brain, and are independent of active, conscious reflection and reasoning. The feeling of knowing happens to us; we cannot make it happen.

Bringing together cutting edge neuroscience, experimental data, and fascinating anecdotes, Robert Burton explores the inconsistent and sometimes paradoxical relationship between our thoughts and what we actually know. Provocative and groundbreaking, On Being Certain, will challenge what you know (or think you know) about the mind, knowledge, and reason.

  It's okay to be nothing, May 3, 2007
By
Jason P. Archer
As an atheist I read this book not to reinforce my own non-belief but for the possibility of discovering a different path to atheism. I got more than I bargained for. As a kid I was raised as a Mormon until I was 13 and simply refused to continue going to church. I still believed in god at the time but I just couldn't shake the bad taste I had in my mouth for Mormonism. It was probably another 7 years or so until I became a full blown atheist. I followed this path through the study of science and the increasing sense of its absolute superiority in its illumination of truth over religion.

Nica Lalli follows a different path. She is told from a very early age that her parents are "nothing". This will shape her life in ways that she will not realize until many years later. She has the advantage from the very beginning of not being poisoned with a mindset that says that it is ok to believe things without any evidence whatsoever.
Tags:: conversion atheism child experience atheism
